Case Study: Photobucket achieves seamless, zero‑downtime migration of 17 billion photos to scalable object storage with NetApp

A NetApp Case Study

Preview of the Photobucket Case Study

Photobucket - Customer Case Study

Photobucket, a photo- and video-hosting service with 100 million registered users and over 17 billion media objects (about 20 PB of data), needed to shift from a file-based NFS environment to scalable object storage to support richer, faster subscription and fulfillment services. The challenge was to migrate massive, business-critical content without downtime or disruption, maintain predictable performance as data grew, and enable developers to innovate beyond file-system limits.

Photobucket deployed a NetApp solution—FlexPod with clustered FAS8040 systems, NetApp FlexArray bridging to E5600 SANs, and NetApp StorageGRID Webscale—implemented by NetApp Professional Services. The phased, nondisruptive migration preserved availability and reclaimed assets while enabling faster time to market, improved content delivery and customer experience, and opened new revenue opportunities with lower risk.
