Ogden City Speeds Access for Virtual Desktops and Databases with NetApp Flash Pool

Ogden City, the local government serving about 83,000 residents in northern Utah, needed faster, more reliable access to data—especially from virtual desktops—and better performance for Microsoft SQL Server while working within a conservative municipal IT budget. Their previous storage platform caused slow system responses and inefficiencies that impacted daily operations.

The city deployed a NetApp FAS2240 with Flash Pool (SATA+SSD), deduplication, and NetApp storage features to cost‑efficiently boost performance. Results included desktop boot times dropping from 90 to 15 seconds, SQL Server latency reduced by 85%, SQL backups shortened from 10 minutes to 10 seconds (and VMware backups from 2 minutes to 20 seconds), 60% less production capacity needed through deduplication, and faster, more reliable mobile and field access to data.
