Konica Minolta Builds a Cloud-Based Disaster Recovery Environment with AltaVault and AWS

Konica Minolta, a global electronics and manufacturing company with the majority of sales overseas, needed to improve business continuity for its core systems after finding tape-based backups could not meet recovery requirements. With a target 48-hour recovery time objective (RTO) and growing data volumes, the company sought a cost‑effective disaster recovery (DR) approach that would protect international operations without overhauling existing storage or backup procedures.

Konica Minolta implemented a cloud‑based DR solution using NetApp AltaVault as a gateway to Amazon Web Services (AWS) in a cold‑start configuration, simply switching backup destinations rather than changing workflows. The deployment cut the backup footprint dramatically (from ~25 TB to 4.7 TB), eliminated the need for DR hardware purchases, enabled easy recovery drills, and demonstrated restoring a 1.2 TB core system within the 48‑hour RTO while lowering operational costs via pay‑as‑you‑go cloud resources.
