A NetApp Case Study
King County, Washington—a large, Microsoft-centric local government serving nearly 2 million residents—faced a fragmented IT landscape with dozens of departments running disparate server environments, duplicated effort, and rising costs. CIO Bill Kehoe set out to consolidate and standardize operations by offering a centrally managed, ultra‑secure Infrastructure-as-a-Service private cloud (the Standard Virtualized Environment) that could provide multi‑tenancy, Microsoft compatibility, and gradual, scalable migration of mission‑critical applications.
Working with Presidio, KCIT deployed a FlexPod solution (NetApp storage + Cisco UCS + Microsoft Private Cloud technologies) using Hyper‑V and System Center, plus NetApp deduplication and thin provisioning for efficiency. The move consolidated 48 data centers into 2, cut storage footprint by about 70%, saved roughly $700,000 annually, enabled rapid provisioning and scalability (plans for up to 800 VMs), and delivered more secure, reliable, and cost‑transparent services to county departments and citizens.
