ITMI Accelerates Research Results with Private Cloud on NetApp

Inova Translational Medicine Institute (ITMI) is a not‑for‑profit research arm of Inova that uses genomics and molecular medicine to individualize patient care. Faced with rapidly growing genomic and clinical datasets (from Epic EHR, whole‑genome sequences, and other sources), ITMI found public cloud storage becoming prohibitively expensive and slow, hampering its ability to run more studies and speed time to discovery.

ITMI implemented an on‑premises private cloud built around NetApp E‑Series and EF‑Series storage, SGI UV 2000 servers, and NetApp management software (deployed by partner ePlus). The new environment cut dataset analysis from weeks to hours, tripled HPC capacity, enabled interactive visualizations of billions of data points, and lowered overall costs—allowing ITMI to launch more genomic studies and accelerate research into disease prevention and treatment.
