Intermountain Healthcare Takes on Big Data with NetApp, Saving US$3 Million in Storage Costs

Intermountain Healthcare, a Utah‑based system of 22 nonprofit hospitals, 185 clinics and about 1,300 physicians, faced a big‑data challenge: rapid 30% annual growth from imaging and genomics and an expanding VDI footprint that required reliable, high‑performance storage while keeping costs and staff levels in check. The IT team needed a scalable, efficient storage platform to maintain fast access to patient information, support virtualization I/O, and lower the total cost of care.

Working with partner Ciber, Intermountain deployed NetApp storage across its data centers—using deduplication, compression, thin provisioning, Flash Cache and Flash Pool hybrid flash, plus Snapshot/SnapMirror/SnapVault for protection and VMware integration. The result: about 3 PB on NetApp, reclaimed up to 60% of targeted storage (roughly 500 TB), saved nearly US$3 million in storage costs (and related power/cooling/space), sustained 30% annual growth without adding staff, and put in a scalable VDI foundation to support 6,000–8,000 users.
