A NetApp Case Study
Metricon, one of Australia’s largest residential homebuilders, had accumulated about 39 TB of warranties and business data and relied on tape-based backups that consumed roughly 10 hours of IT time per week, were costly to manage, and were slow and risky to retrieve. The company needed to cut backup time and costs while keeping archived data secure and readily accessible.
Metricon moved to a hybrid cloud backup using NetApp AltaVault with Microsoft Azure, which deduplicated and reduced stored data from 39 TB to 7 TB and uploaded it in a week. The change cut backup management by 80% (from 10 to about 2 hours weekly), sped restores from hours to minutes, and eliminated about AUD 30,000 (US$28,000) a year in tape-related costs—while improving reliability and scalability.
