GumGum uses AI to analyze web pages and serve context-appropriate ads, a process that demands large, variable GPU and compute capacity. With traffic swinging from about 4 million to over 18 million ad requests per minute and EC2 costs ballooning (roughly $120K/month in one data center), the company needed a way to cut infrastructure spend, use spot instances without risking uptime, and keep operations simple for a small engineering team.

GumGum adopted Spot by NetApp’s Elastigroup and Spot Ocean to run on managed spot instances with predictive termination handling, automated right‑sizing and clear cost reporting. The solution delivered roughly US$500K in annual savings, enabled blue‑green deployments that are ~50% faster, improved cost visibility for container workloads, and provided a simple UI and managed support that met GumGum’s uptime and operational needs.
