Financial Institution Simplifies Mainframe and Open Systems Backup with NetApp E-Series

A leading public pension fund serving more than 1 million members faced an aging, costly backup environment for both its x86 systems (file serving, email, virtual desktops) and its mainframe financial applications. Refreshing each environment separately would have increased vendor complexity, management overhead, and risk to critical mainframe data in the event of hardware failure or disaster.

The fund consolidated both workloads on NetApp E‑Series storage—using Commvault for x86 and Luminex for mainframe—deploying 1.4 PB to protect about 300 TB of x86 and 360 TB of mainframe data across two sites. The single-array solution reduced costs and complexity, shrank data center footprint, provided high availability and required LUN sizing, and delivered faster rebuilds (minutes vs. hours/days), 99.999% reliability and zero data loss during drive rebuilds.
