Despegar, founded in Argentina in 1999, is Latin America’s largest online travel agency and had to continuously innovate to stay ahead of local and global competitors. Developers were constrained by slow, operations-dependent provisioning and QA processes that limited releases to about 3–5 updates per week, creating a barrier to faster time to market as data and customer expectations grew.

Despegar built a private cloud on OpenStack with NetApp FAS and E-Series storage (clustered Data ONTAP, iSCSI direct drivers and MetroCluster for high availability), enabling self-service provisioning, faster CI/CD, and nondisruptive maintenance. The result: deployments surged to over 1,500 updates, developers now push ~300 apps/updates daily, the team grew from 100 to 600 engineers, site performance and 24/7 availability improved, and the platform scales to support rapid data growth.
