Siemens Mobility’s Railigent is an AWS-based application suite that monitors trains, tracks and signals to reduce maintenance costs and unplanned downtime. Because breaches or misconfigurations could increase costs and reduce availability, Siemens needed an out-of-the-box way to continuously monitor security and cloud spend across four AWS accounts during rapid CI/CD development, with granular reporting and policy compliance.

Siemens deployed CloudCheckr (now Spot by NetApp) — starting with a POC in December 2016 and production in mid‑2017 — to provide automated best-practice checks, prioritized alerts, self‑healing automation, and multi‑tag cost allocation reporting. The solution immediately improved security posture, enabled more detailed cost visibility, saved up to 20% in total cloud costs (and 30–40% on RDS), and is now used regularly by 100+ employees for ongoing governance.
