City of Riverside Building the Connected Community of the Future

The City of Riverside, California—a 317,000‑resident “city of arts and innovation”—faced the challenge of modernizing its data center to support a 24/7 virtual city hall, mobile apps, and more than 100 ongoing tech projects. With an aging EMC SAN nearing end of life, the city needed a scalable, highly available storage platform that would enable nondisruptive operations for mission‑critical finance, utilities, and public‑safety services.

Working with partner Datalink, Riverside migrated 500 TB to NetApp FAS8040 and FAS8020 clusters running clustered Data ONTAP, with SnapMirror replication and Flash Cache/Flash Pool acceleration. The solution delivered enterprise SAN and file performance, seamless disaster recovery, “five nines” availability without rip‑and‑replace upgrades, and reduced capex/opex, power, and space—improving citizen services and preparing the city for future IoT‑driven data growth.
