A NetApp Case Study
Choice Hotels International, a global hospitality franchisor with more than 7,000 properties across 12 brands, migrated its booking infrastructure to AWS but struggled with limited visibility, missing metadata, uncontrolled resource sprawl, and rising cloud costs. The company needed a way to see who was using what, enforce governance and tagging, and identify idle or oversized resources to control spend and plan capacity.
Choice Hotels adopted CloudCheckr (now part of Spot by NetApp) to centralize reporting, tagging, governance, and cost-optimization recommendations. Using Reserved Instance guidance, unused-resource reporting and right-sizing insights, the team reduced provisioned EC2-related resources from 6,000 to 4,500 (saving about $50K/month), modernized EBS volumes to save $64K/month (~$770K/year), and removed thousands of abandoned resources (saving $43K/month in 2021), delivering over $1M in annualized savings while improving collaboration, chargebacks, and capacity planning.
