A NetApp Case Study
Canandaigua City School District (CCSD) in New York serves about 3,775 K–12 students and relies on technology for 5,000 users across 2,300 devices and 500 applications. Needing to expand virtualization, improve application and desktop performance, and meet New York State Education Department mandates for data protection and business continuity (including Common Core requirements), CCSD found its existing SAN lacked the capacity, flexibility, and resiliency to support those goals.
CCSD deployed NetApp storage (FAS3240 and FAS3140) with Data ONTAP, MetroCluster, Virtual Storage Console, Flash Cache, and SnapVault, implemented with AdviStor’s support. The new platform virtualizes 90% of applications (about 300 VMs, VDI for 1,000 desktops), cut boot times to ~30 seconds (giving teachers ~16% more class time), reduced full backup time from 8 hours to 18 minutes, saved 2.2TB via deduplication, and delivered scalable, always-available storage that meets NYSED requirements without increasing budget.
