A NetApp Case Study
AZ Turnhout, formed in 2009 by the merger of two regional hospitals, needed to unify and modernize its IT across two campuses to support care for 260,000 patients a year. Key challenges were standardizing the network, virtualizing servers, and vastly improving storage performance—in particular the radiology environment, where high‑resolution images loaded in a few seconds at one site but took over 15 seconds at the other—plus adding redundancy for failover.
Fujitsu designed and deployed a NetApp MetroCluster and Agfa imaging platform and virtualised 95% of the server estate with VMware, cutting physical servers from over 140 to 15. The solution provides synchronous mirroring across sites, a virtualised data centre at each campus, improved radiology response times (images load in seconds), stronger disaster recovery, and ongoing managed services with 24/7 support and a four‑hour response—delivering greater stability, cost savings and future scalability.
