SK Telecom Protects Mobile Network from DDoS Attacks and Mobile App Anomalies with Arbor Networks SP Technology

SK Telecom, South Korea’s leading wireless operator with over 26 million subscribers, faced soaring mobile data and signaling growth from rapid 3G/4G adoption and widespread smartphone use. That surge, combined with an increasing number of Internet-sourced DDoS attacks and poorly behaving mobile applications that cause traffic spikes, threatened network performance and customer experience.

To protect its mobile packet core SK Telecom deployed Arbor Networks SP for pervasive flow-based visibility and anomaly detection together with Arbor TMS for surgical mitigation. The combined solution detects both malicious DDoS traffic and non‑malicious app-driven spikes and removes only the offending traffic (via BGP off‑ramping or inline modes), enabling SK Telecom to maintain network performance and service availability.
