A Nerdio Case Study
The Newfoundland and Labrador Centre for Health Information (NLCHI) is the provincial eHealth organization that supports 20,000 healthcare workers and needed to enable large-scale remote access quickly during the COVID-19 surge. Facing mostly on‑premises infrastructure and urgent operational demands, NLCHI worked with Microsoft technologies and partnered with Nerdio, deploying Azure Virtual Desktop and Nerdio Manager for Enterprise to deliver remote Windows desktops to critical staff.
Nerdio set up Nerdio Manager for Enterprise to automate image creation, deployment to each regional health authority, credentialed server provisioning, Azure file store connections, and auto-scaling. The solution enabled NLCHI to roll out about 1,700 AVD desktops in five days (with peak usage around 3,700), use Windows 10 Enterprise multi‑session to support ~32 users per session host (vs. two) — cutting compute costs dramatically (quoted as a factor of 30) — and scale from 30 servers down to one each night, reducing Azure compute spend while requiring minimal user training.
