A Neo4j Case Study
Glidewell Laboratories, a dental lab in Irvine, California, needed a way to model and manage complex relationships across its manufacturing and enterprise processes—starting with a workflow engine for prosthetic tooth production and ultimately extending company-wide. The team sought a data model that was more expressive and natural than traditional databases to represent how items relate to one another throughout their operations.
They implemented a Neo4j-based workflow engine, integrating it with existing tools like MongoDB (catalogs), Elasticsearch (search), and C# microservices running in Docker. Neo4j’s expressive graph model, Cypher query language, and performance advantages made it easy to adopt and incorporate into other systems, enabling a generic, reusable schema that has been successfully applied across multiple applications and is being extended beyond manufacturing.
