A Neo4j Case Study
Gallium Artistic Services, led by CTO Lauren Winter in Berkeley and funded by game designer Will Wright, is building SimYou — a simulation that models a person’s memories, relationships and concepts. The core challenge was representing rich, interconnected human memory and the evolving concept relationships (for example, what “bicycle” means to each person) — a data shape that proved ill-suited to traditional relational databases.
Gallium adopted the Neo4j graph database, which they prototyped on AWS in a day and integrated directly with an iOS client using Neo4j’s REST API and Cypher. The graph model lets them weight emotions and relationships to compute personalized concepts, compare users against population aggregates, and extend the schema without rebuilding. The result is a fast, production-ready platform that delivers deep, privacy-respecting insights and unique marketing signals while remaining easy to iterate.
