Data Lineage Tool Improves Risk Management, Drives Compliance

UBS, a global financial services firm, needed to comply with BCBS 239 and gain deep visibility into data lineage for risk reporting and governance. Its initial Group Data Dictionary built on Oracle struggled with complex joins, slow queries and poor visualization, making it difficult to trace data origins, impacts and quality across the organization.

UBS rebuilt the lineage and governance tool on Neo4j, synchronizing metadata from Oracle with an initial load and incremental real‑time updates, then rendering lineage via GraphJSON and D3 visualizations. The graph approach enabled fast, real‑time traversal and exports to Excel, simplified impact analysis and auditing, and allowed UBS to meet regulatory requirements more quickly while gaining clearer, up‑to‑date insight into data flows.
