CSX Building a Digital Twin of the Largest Railroad in the Eastern U.S. with Neo4j

CSX, the largest railroad on the U.S. eastern seaboard, needed a better way to track and understand the relationships between its highly complex, asset-heavy operations. Using Neo4j Enterprise, CSX set out to modernize legacy, manual reporting systems and create a single source of truth for shipment, equipment, and network data across its 20,000 route miles and thousands of locomotives, rail cars, and employees.

Neo4j helped CSX build a near-real-time digital twin of its rail network, centralizing shipment data and improving asset tracking, visibility, and reporting. By using Neo4j’s graph model and Cypher MERGE statements to fix duplicate-node issues, CSX was able to represent events more accurately and extend data through APIs to other systems, enabling better customer shipment visibility and more efficient logistics operations.
