Adler Planetarium soars to new heights with NEC’s ultra-narrow LCD displays

Adler Planetarium in Chicago needed a more engaging, hands‑on exhibit for its “Shoot for the Moon” gallery to simulate flying over the lunar surface and captivate visitors of all ages. After an initial 3x2 array of 30" monitors proved too small and bezel‑heavy, the Adler selected NEC Display Solutions’ 46" NEC MultiSync X461UN ultra‑narrow‑bezel displays to achieve higher resolution and a more immersive experience.

NEC Display Solutions, working with reseller CDW and the Adler’s digital team, supplied 12 X461UN units configured in a 3x4 matrix to create a 14‑foot‑diagonal Moon Wall driven by custom software and NASA lunar datasets (Clementine and LRO). The tilted, rail‑protected installation delivered noticeably improved image detail, realism and visitor engagement—described as a “huge hit with kids”—while enabling regular imagery updates and future enhancements.
