Low-Cost Computing for Municipalities

Esenler Municipality in Istanbul launched Turkey’s first digital library, offering over 7,500 digital books (including 2,500 audio books for the visually impaired). The challenge was to provide secure, low-cost, easy-to-manage access for a changing user base while working within tight municipal IT budgets and avoiding high PC-related maintenance, heat, space, and electricity costs.

Esenler deployed 3 host PCs and 30 NComputing L300 access devices (via reseller Dojop Technologies) to create a 10:1 user-to-host ratio, replacing traditional PCs with virtual desktops. The solution cut electricity use by about 75%, eliminated heat and space issues, reduced maintenance and outsourcing needs, and increased user convenience and scalability—freeing budget for additional monitors, printers, and software.
