Preview of the BLD Sloan Case Study

Auto Parts maker Wins Productivity Race with NComputing

BLD Products, an auto-parts manufacturer in Holland, Michigan, needed to cost-effectively upgrade aging, nearly six-year-old PCs and ensure high uptime in a harsh factory environment (assembly, machining, welding, injection molding and stamping) without the high upfront costs of replacing every workstation or deploying an expensive thin‑client server infrastructure.

Working with partner GHA Technologies, BLD deployed NComputing L‑series virtual desktops at a 4:1 ratio (four L‑series devices per shared PC), after testing wireless and USB barcode scanner compatibility. The change cut upfront hardware costs (only a quarter of PCs replaced), boosted reliability and uptime (one station ran 95 days without reboot), reduced energy use dramatically (5W vs 150–200W per PC), and lowered IT support effort and operating costs while supporting existing AS400 applications.
