Ensuring the protection of a DDoS solution across multiple data centres for a European financial services organisation

The European Financial Services Organisation engaged NCC Group to provide assurance of its DDoS mitigation platform across multiple data centres. The client’s challenge was to verify that its ISP’s protection, plus internal people and processes, could correctly detect, alert and scrub malicious traffic and meet service‑level expectations during an attack.

NCC Group executed a controlled, two‑hour network‑layer DDoS test using almost 1,000 bots (TCP‑SYN: 500 bots ≈450 Mbps; mixed SYN/UDP: 450 bots ≈480 Mbps, UDP packets ~1,400 bytes). The mitigation rapidly detected and eliminated attack traffic, services remained available, and a temporary loss of connectivity to an external firewall was corrected during testing. The exercise gave the organisation measurable assurance in its technology, processes and incident response, and NCC Group was subsequently asked to run further successful tests across additional data centres.
