Never standing still, Audi steers towards virtualization

Audi, a major automotive manufacturer, sought to digitally transform its production planning to create a site-independent and highly accurate virtual model of its vast factory halls. To achieve this, they partnered with vendor NavVis and utilized its mobile mapping systems, including the NavVis M6 indoor mobile mapping system, to capture the complex as-is conditions of their facilities.

NavVis provided the reality capture solution that enabled Audi to scan its production sites rapidly and efficiently. The implemented solution allowed Audi to scan 250,000 square meters in just 34 working days, at a rate of roughly 1,000 square meters per hour. The resulting point cloud data was integrated into Audi's planning systems, enabling remote measurements and virtual planning. This drastically reduced the need for physical site visits and business travel, saving significant time and cost, and was particularly advantageous for maintaining operations during the Coronavirus pandemic.
