For an earthquake-damaged castle, reality capture helps put the pieces back together

Kozo Keikaku Engineering Inc. (KKE) faced a significant challenge in assessing extensive earthquake damage at the historic Kumamoto Castle. The site was large and difficult to access, and traditional photography proved insufficient for capturing all the necessary details for restoration, creating gaps in documentation. To address this, KKE turned to vendor NavVis and its reality capture technology, including its mobile mapping systems.

The NavVis solution enabled KKE to conduct comprehensive scans, creating high-quality 3D point clouds and panoramic images of the castle. This allowed the team to visualize damage, attach information to geo-tagged points, and monitor the restoration progress efficiently. Using the NavVis VLX system, a team captured 10,800 square meters in just two days. The results were highly detailed damage reports and a more efficient workflow, which inspired plans to use NavVis technology for preserving other cultural properties.
