AI Assistant for Clinical Review To Reduce Burden and Improve Quality and Value-Based Care Outcomes

The American Academy of Family Physicians (AAFP) faced a significant challenge with physician burnout, a problem driven in large part by the immense clerical burden of manually reviewing electronic health records (EHRs) to prepare for patient visits. This time-consuming process, often squeezed in between appointments and after hours, left physicians feeling rushed and concerned about missing critical information. Seeking to optimize the family medicine experience, the AAFP's Innovation Lab partnered with the vendor Navina to evaluate its AI-powered clinical assistant.

Navina implemented its AI Assistant, which automatically reviews a patient's entire medical history, including labs, referrals, and scanned documents, to create a concise, problem-oriented summary. This solution drastically reduced the time physicians spent on manual chart reviews. The results were substantial: participants reported a 61% decrease in visit preparation time, a 27% increase in feeling fully prepared for appointments, and a significant improvement in identifying care gaps. Furthermore, an analysis of 991 encounters showed a 25% increase in found diagnoses and a 37% increase in risk adjustment scores. The physicians' feedback was overwhelmingly positive, resulting in a Net Promoter Score of 100 for Navina.
