Valero Improves Procedure Management Using PolicyTech Software

Valero Energy’s Port Arthur refinery — one of 16 refineries with more than 800 employees — needed a consistent, accessible way to manage operating procedures that had been kept in spreadsheets and paper copies across four complexes. After a major rewrite of manuals in 2007, managers worried the documents would again fall into disarray, creating compliance, safety and efficiency risks.

Valero deployed NAVEX PolicyTech, a web-based policy and procedure management system with automated review/approval workflows, unique network IDs for filtered access and auditable “mark-as-read” attestation, quizzes, and cost‑efficient concurrent licensing. Within a year Port Arthur saw faster access, stronger safety awareness and easier compliance reporting, and PolicyTech has since been rolled out to eight Valero refineries.
