How Voters Not Politicians mobilized to end gerrymandering in Michigan

Voters Not Politicians, a volunteer‑led, nonpartisan campaign seeking to end gerrymandering in Michigan via ballot Prop 2, faced the challenge of rapidly recruiting, training, and coordinating thousands of volunteers to collect petition signatures and run a statewide get‑out‑the‑vote effort. To scale outreach and distribute leadership across regional teams, they used NationBuilder’s site and database tools — including built‑in action pages and membership management features — to capture supporters, run petitions and surveys, and assign permissions to field captains.

Using NationBuilder to run volunteer surveys, tag supporters, create members‑only resources, and deploy action pages, Voters Not Politicians trained 3,800 circulators, collected over 425,000 petition signatures in 110 days (well above the 315,654 required), mobilized 18,189 volunteers, knocked 460,000 doors, and ultimately won Prop 2 with 61% of the vote (about 2.5 million voters). NationBuilder’s platform enabled the rapid recruitment, organization, and measurable outreach that powered the campaign’s victory.
