A NationBuilder Case Study
Apex Clean Energy, a developer of wind farms across the U.S. and Canada with more than fifty active projects and roughly 220 employees, needed to counter organized opposition and manage long-term supporter, landowner, and government relationships across dozens of communities. To coordinate outreach, track communications, and share data between local project teams and headquarters, Apex adopted the NationBuilder platform—using nation-level databases and tag-sharing to centralize supporter information and campaign activity.
Using NationBuilder, Apex implemented a six-point public affairs strategy—identifying and activating supporters, building government and media relationships, maintaining local presence, and running targeted email/text campaigns—across more than fifty nations and dozens of project developers. NationBuilder’s relationship tracking and data sync helped Apex commercialize projects in Iowa, Texas, and South Dakota, secure permits and approvals (enabling the sale of Upland Prairie Wind to Alliant Energy), and deliver the largest renewable project serving Fort Hood, Texas, improving team efficiency and sustaining long-term community engagement.
