Using NI LabVIEW and NI CompactRIO to Create a Liver Dialysis Prototype Authorized for Clinical Trials in Germany

Hepa Wash GmbH, a medical device company, faced the challenge of creating a cost-effective liver dialysis prototype that met strict performance specifications and could achieve medical device safety certification under IEC 60601 and IEC 62304 guidelines for clinical trials in Germany. The company needed to develop the system and its control software rapidly while ensuring full regulatory compliance.

National Instruments provided the solution using their NI LabVIEW FPGA and LabVIEW Real-Time modules along with NI CompactRIO hardware. This combination allowed Hepa Wash to quickly develop and document the control software, including the use of NI Requirements Gateway to create traceability documentation. The result was that National Instruments' technology enabled the deployment of the first authorized system within just seven months, dramatically reducing time to market and helping secure further investment for the project.
