A National Instruments Case Study
The University of Sheffield, specifically Professor Martyn Paley and his company InnerVision, faced the challenge of creating a low-cost control system for MRI research that could operate independently on standard clinical MRI hardware without requiring any modifications to the existing, proprietary systems. To overcome this, they worked with National Instruments to develop a solution using NI LabVIEW software and PXI off-the-shelf hardware.
National Instruments provided an integrated MRI system controller and multichannel spectrometer built on their flexible LabVIEW platform and powerful, reliable NI hardware. The solution resulted in a highly capable and flexible research tool that in some cases exceeds systems from major manufacturers. The university and InnerVision can easily customize the system through software and have successfully used it to scan over 1,000 newborns on a niche system, with their NI-based spectrometers being chosen by other leading UK research institutions for ongoing magnetic resonance studies.
