A National Instruments Case Study
AEROSTAR SA, a Romanian provider of aircraft maintenance and repair, faced the challenge of upgrading its 40-year-old test bench for fighter jet turbojet engines. The existing system was obsolete, requiring manual data recording and a fuel-inefficient gravimetric measurement method. The primary challenge for National Instruments was to extend the set of monitored parameters and modernize the system without interrupting the ongoing testing and delivery of engines to their customers.
The solution implemented by National Instruments used an NI CompactDAQ data acquisition system with various modules and was controlled by software developed in NI LabVIEW. This system integrated new, high-accuracy sensors, including a Coriolis mass flow meter, and complemented the existing equipment. The results were significant, leading to a reduction in fuel consumption and CO2 emissions per engine test run, as well as time savings from instant data acquisition and remote video monitoring capabilities.
