Siemens Wind Power Develops a Hardware-in-the-Loop Simulator for Wind Turbine Control System Software Testing

The customer, CIM Industrial Systems A/S, was contracted by Siemens Wind Power to overcome the challenge of testing frequent software releases for wind turbine control systems. Their previous test system was outdated, difficult to maintain, and lacked the automation, scalability, and remote control capabilities required for efficient verification. They needed a new, flexible hardware-in-the-loop (HIL) simulator to rigorously test embedded software and system components.

National Instruments provided the solution using its LabVIEW Real-Time and LabVIEW FPGA modules, NI TestStand software, and the NI PXI hardware platform. This created a modular, real-time test system that simulates wind turbine components and interfaces with custom protocols, enabling automated testing. The new system from National Instruments is highly scalable, maximizes multicore processing power, and provides an intuitive interface, allowing for efficient verification of software releases and future expansion of testing capabilities.
