Revolutionary Cancer Treatment Minimizes Damage to Healthy Tissue

The customer, SIDeA, faced the challenge of developing a control system for a hadron therapy cancer treatment facility that could maximize the destruction of tumor cells while minimizing damage to the surrounding healthy tissue. To achieve this precise and safe treatment, they partnered with National Instruments.

Using National Instruments PXI hardware, CompactRIO, and the LabVIEW FPGA and Real-Time modules, SIDeA developed a complex control system. This solution provided the high-speed timing, synchronization, and accurate beam measurement required to safely direct accelerated particle beams at tumors. The successful implementation at the Italian National Center for Oncological Hadron therapy (CNAO) has enabled the treatment of patients, with estimates suggesting more than 3,000 new patients per year in Italy will benefit from this advanced therapy.
