Load and Torque Testing on a Grand Scale

The customer, Computer Controlled Solutions Limited, faced the challenge of creating a colossal test rig to validate massive 30-ton marine drivetrains. They needed a system capable of applying hundreds of kilonewtons of torque and moving a 25-ton platform with submillimeter accuracy to improve shipping efficiency, a task beyond the capabilities of traditional programmable logic controllers.

National Instruments provided the solution with its LabVIEW software and CompactRIO hardware platform. This integrated system delivered the deterministic control and high-accuracy data acquisition required for safe operation. The result was a fully operational, remote-accessible test rig that gave the customer the ultimate flexibility for research and testing, establishing a scalable platform for future "big engineering" projects.
