A National Instruments Case Study
MMI (Medical Microinstruments) faced the challenge of developing a highly precise and compliant robotic surgical system for microsurgery, a field requiring extraordinary steadiness to perform procedures on extremely delicate structures. To bring their Symani Surgical System to market quickly while meeting stringent regulatory standards, they needed a flexible and reliable development platform. They chose to work with National Instruments and utilized their NI CompactRIO hardware along with the LabVIEW Real-Time and FPGA Modules.
By implementing the National Instruments platform, MMI built a responsive and scalable embedded control system. This solution simplified development, accelerated integration, and helped ensure consistent performance. The result was that MMI achieved FDA authorization and CE Mark certification, bringing their product to market in just four years. The Symani System has now been used in over 1,500 successful procedures, redefining microsurgery and earning a spot on TIME Magazine's Best Inventions of 2024 list.
