Full Automation of a Highly Dynamic Steering Test Bench for Realistic Testing with NI VeriStand, LabVIEW and PXI

The customer, ITK Engineering AG, faced the challenge of meeting the highly dynamic and realistic testing requirements for modern electric power steering systems, which are needed to minimize costly and time-consuming road tests. To address these challenges, including handling active test objects and stringent demands for precision, they utilized products from vendor National Instruments, including NI VeriStand and PXI.

The solution implemented by National Instruments provided the high-performance, real-time automation platform for ITK's test bench. Using NI VeriStand, LabVIEW, and PXI hardware, the vendor's technology enabled precise feedback control at 20 kHz, allowing for the realistic simulation of road loads and the successful execution of "Driver-in-the-Loop" and simulation-based testing. This resulted in a highly stable system that achieved the goal of minimizing physical test drives, and it featured an automated controller design methodology that significantly reduced setup times for new tests.
