Efficiently Prototyping 6G Joint Comms and Sensing Systems

The customer, NOFFZ Technologies, faced the challenge of researching and prototyping new 6G joint communication and radar sensing (JC&S) systems, which required a hardware platform capable of generating and measuring arbitrary waveforms in the mmWave range with a simple API. The Barkhausen Institute was seeking a 74 GHz mmWave transceiver system to validate new waveforms that efficiently combine both functionalities.

Vendor National Instruments, with help from NOFFZ, provided a solution using the NI mmWave Transceiver System. NOFFZ developed a modular software framework with a Python API and FPGA additions, abstracting the complex hardware and allowing researchers to focus on algorithm development. This enabled the Barkhausen Institute to quickly achieve initial prototyping milestones, test communication algorithms, and publish peer-reviewed papers on their findings, significantly accelerating their 6G research.
