COTS-Based Active and Passive SAR/ISAR Radar Design and Tests

The Warsaw University of Technology Institute of Electronic Systems faced the challenge of designing and testing innovative active and passive SAR/ISAR radar demonstrators within a very short timeframe. To meet this ambitious goal, they turned to National Instruments (NI) and its commercial off-the-shelf (COTS) hardware.

The solution involved using the NI USRP platform to build a lightweight active radar system and NI PXI Vector Signal Analyzers with synchronization modules for high-throughput passive radar signal recording. By utilizing NI's COTS equipment, the team drastically reduced development time, allowing them to focus on complex digital signal processing instead of hardware design. This resulted in a fully functional, sub-5 kg radar system capable of high-resolution imaging for deployment on drones and airplanes.
