Combining Passive WiFi Sensing and Machine Learning Systems to Monitor Health, Activity, and Well-Being Within Nursing Homes

coventry university, a research institution, needed a solution for the non-invasive, around-the-clock monitoring of patient health, activity, and well-being within nursing homes. The established methods, including wearables and cameras, presented challenges related to patient comfort, privacy, and accuracy.

Using National Instruments' USRP software-defined radio device and the LabVIEW system design software, the team created a passive WiFi sensing system. This solution detects body movements and vital signs through walls without any physical contact by analyzing how existing WiFi signals reflect off a person. The project, powered by National Instruments, accelerated their groundbreaking research, leading to innovative advancements, over 15 research publications, patents, and a practical prototype for commercial application.
