CATARC Uses Battery-in-the-Loop Simulation to Meet Battery Test Trends

The customer, CATARC (China Automotive Technology and Research Center), needed a more effective way to test electric vehicle battery packs. Their existing hardware-in-the-loop (HIL) testing was insufficient for performance verification, while real-world vehicle testing was too limited in scope and highly demanding. To bridge this gap, they partnered with National Instruments.

The solution from National Instruments was a battery-in-the-loop (BIL) real-time simulation platform. This system, which utilized NI software including LabVIEW and TestStand, created a virtual environment to test physical battery packs under a wide range of realistic and extreme conditions. This approach significantly reduced the need for costly and time-consuming real-vehicle tests, allowed for accurate control of safety-critical scenarios, and enabled CATARC to meet national functional safety standards for its automotive industry clients.
