A Modular Rugged Chassis for Military Applications

National Instruments worked with Digilogic Systems Pvt., an Indian company specializing in test equipment for defense and aerospace, to overcome a significant challenge. The challenge was to adapt PXI Express commercial off-the-shelf (COTS) systems, which were only suitable for lab environments, for reliable deployment in the harsh conditions of military field applications.

The solution from National Instruments was the co-development of a Modular Rugged Chassis. This chassis was built with a ruggedized design using HE30 material and integrated NI PXIe hardware, including a controller and various I/O modules. The system successfully passed rigorous environmental tests for temperature, shock, and vibration, meeting military standards. As a direct result, National Instruments enabled Digilogic to deliver two field-ready systems to customers, effectively extending the benefits of the PXI Express platform from the lab into demanding operational environments.
