How the PGA TOUR uses NLG to Enhance Their Digital Offering

PGA TOUR faced a content scale problem: with nearly 150 players competing most weeks and tight turnaround between rounds, its digital team could only produce recaps for players at the top of the leaderboard, leaving fans unsure about many players' performances. To solve this, the PGA TOUR partnered with Narrative Science and implemented its Quill natural language generation platform to automate player round recaps.

Narrative Science configured Quill with the TOUR’s data and editorial rules to identify noteworthy holes and generate AP-style recaps for every player immediately after they finish a round and again at day’s end. The result: comprehensive coverage for the entire field (≈150 players per tournament) instead of just leaderboard leaders, faster publication of player stories, and readily available recaps in each player’s “Latest” content on the PGA website.
