A NAKIVO Case Study
Kantonsschule Hohe Promenade (KSHP) is a Zurich public middle school with about 700 students and an IT estate of roughly 40 servers (20 physical, 20 ESXi hosts). KSHP struggled to protect its VMware virtual machines using file‑based and script‑based backups: backups grew too large, were unreliable, and could only run one at a time. The ICT team wanted a solution that would dramatically reduce backup size, speed up VM backups, and run on existing Synology NAS hardware without adding a Windows dependency.
They deployed NAKIVO Backup & Replication on the Synology NAS, turning the appliance into an all‑in‑one VM backup appliance with deduplication, compression and instant recovery. Backups now complete quickly (about an hour for two clusters), global deduplication and compression reduce backup storage to under 10% (≈10:1), and automated reports improve reliability. The school gained faster, more space‑efficient VM protection using existing hardware and a simple web interface.
