Case Study: University of St. Thomas achieves centralized, proactive monitoring and operational intelligence with Nagios

A Nagios Case Study

Preview of the University of St. Thomas Case Study

University of St. Thomas gains invaluable insights and proactively solves issues with Nagios

The University of St. Thomas, a comprehensive Catholic urban university with more than 11,000 students, needed to replace fragmented, vendor‑specific monitoring tools across 400+ servers and 300+ network devices. With a small Linux team and a tight budget, the university sought a customizable, centralized monitoring and alerting solution and selected Nagios XI from Nagios to present, trend, and proactively alert on campus services so issues could be resolved before users reported them.

Nagios implemented Nagios XI as a single, easy‑to‑use source for vendor plugins and custom checks (including Raspberry Pi probes deployed across campus), giving St. Thomas high‑level visibility, trending, and faster detection and resolution of outages. The Nagios XI deployment helped identify choke points and generate quantifiable data that drove decisions about server purchases, bandwidth provisioning/restriction, and operational improvements, with the university reporting time savings and better service delivery as measurable benefits.
