Sunrise Communications AG, Switzerland’s largest telecommunications provider serving over 2.86 million customers, faced a fragmented monitoring landscape after mergers and reorganizations that produced redundant systems, licensing and hardware costs, and obscured overall IT health. To consolidate monitoring, save time and money, and gain a unified view of their infrastructure, Sunrise selected Nagios’ IT monitoring solution.

Nagios implemented a hybrid monitoring architecture using virtual Nagios servers for scalable collectors, two physical servers for centralized monitoring and USB text-alert modems, and extensive use of Nagios plugins and customized check packages to handle varied systems. The Nagios deployment consolidated multiple commercial tools into a single central platform, improved operational efficiency and visibility, and produced measurable cost reductions and lower maintenance overhead (Sunrise reports reduced maintenance costs).
