Case Study: Bitnetix achieves zero-downtime migration to Nagios XI and Chef integration with Nagios

A Nagios Case Study

Preview of the Bitnetix Case Study

Bitnetix customer integrates Nagios XI and Chef with zero downtime

Bitnetix, an outsourced IT management and VoIP provider (SmartVox) for non-profits and SMBs, needed to migrate a customer from a Nagios Core + Livestatus setup that monitored dynamically generated AWS servers (sending thousands of emails) to Nagios XI with zero downtime. They also had to integrate Nagios XI with Chef for automated host management and preserve PagerDuty notifications so no alerts were lost during the transition.

Nagios implemented an integrated solution that exported configuration from Chef into Nagios XI, pre-populated hosts so customers could disable them in Core and enable them in XI on their schedule, integrated contact management with LDAP/Active Directory, and connected XI to PagerDuty via a Perl script with escalation handling. As a result, Nagios enabled true zero-downtime migration, automated add/remove of clients via Chef, dynamic host-group assignment based on Chef attributes, and reliable notification delivery—dramatically improving deployment speed and operational efficiency.
