A Nagios Case Study
Bitnetix, an outsourced IT management and consulting firm, was hired to monitor a billion-dollar e-commerce retailer’s online store and ensure cart/checkout functionality, detect website defamation, and notify staff of issues. They faced geographic challenges (the client data center was 500+ miles away), separate production/QA/staging/dev environments, strict firewall restrictions, and a high volume of false-positive alerts. To address this, Bitnetix implemented Nagios solutions, including Nagios Core with automatic configuration management, event handlers, and tailored alert/escalation rules.
Nagios configured SSH firewall access for NOC staff, page‑analysis checks, centralized configurations pushed automatically to worker servers, and event handlers that restart services (resolving ~90% of issues before alerts). As a result, Nagios helped Bitnetix cut notifications and false positives dramatically, raise uptime from ~85% to over 98% annually, and enable operations that Bitnetix estimates drove roughly $125,000,000 in additional sales.
